The love for sweets, sketching, the sands of Rajasthan and travelling around the world, compelled Sarah Fotheringham (and her boyfriend, Maninder Singh) to create a textile design studio, Safomasi , which is an portmanteau of their names.
Their designs are decidedly expressive and colourful, bespattered with Sarah’s distinctive and inventive drawing style. Each piece is entirely handmade and matchless.
On their many travels around India, Sarah noticed that the country was diverse and yet it had one commonality, the Indian love for sweets or mithai. From the Vale of Kashmir to the villages around Kerala, from the hills of Darjeeling to the white sands of Goa, one thing remained relentless. Sweets were to be found everywhere, in a myriad of colours and shapes. The variations were endless and she developed a passion towards their documentation, to photograph them rather than taste them (much to the perplexity of the local shopkeepers).
This process of documenting the sweets clubbed with her designer instincts led to a final 13 colour print which featured 169 different mithai’s. She combined them with candy stripes with a dominant colour palette of pink, yellow and orange. The result was an eclectic mix of Indian and western influences.
Her love for capturing everyday objects and transcribing them onto fabric is also seen through the camel prints on sale. A visit to the magical Pushkar Fair recently, saw Sarah immediately translate the beauty of the unique event into a form of art on fabric. The travel enthused quilts with a camel motif are righteous in transporting you to the numinous and magical camel fair in Puskhar.
So whether you fall in love with the sweet treats, that would flavour your living room with their saccharinity or if you are more inclined towards the magic of the Camel Fair in the deserts of Rajasthan, you are rest assured that no matter what you choose, these works of art which are committed to cloth, are a must have and an advisable investment. We are sure that whatever you choose, the end result would be a treat for your eyes. Or maybe, you could spend the day relishing in the mithai around your living room and look forward to good night’s sleep under the desert stars of Pushkar. Either way, we assure you a fairylike adventure, set in fabric, no matter what you choose.
