Designer Bytes ~ Fun with Fusion

November 24, 2012Posted in: Designer Bytes

Deceptively pronounced as ‘My-kah’, Majka  meaning motherland is an Indie fashion label by Arunima Majhi launched in July 2012.

A globally oriented tribute to indigenous textiles, Majka  celebrates the fun factor so deeply embedded in the Indian tradition through the use of vivid colours and surprisingly delightful prints.

With one foot rooted in the glorious past and the other taking big strides in the new world order, Majka’s  designs do not seem to be undergoing an identity crisis. Instead, they have been repeatedly been favoured by women with an eye to appreciate tasteful fusion.Check out Majka’s  entire range of Ikat inspired fusion garments  on fabulloso!

Admitting to have a strong aversion to a certain shade of neon pink, the quirky and fun Arunima took out a few moments to tell us a little bit about herself. Read on . . .

What was the first thing you ever designed?
A ridiculous pair of printed culottes with a button down blouse – I must’ve been 9 years old at the time and thought I looked so cool in them.

What are some of your favorite clothing stores/websites?

I only e-window shop on those. Opening Ceremony and Need Supply Co. off the top of my head.

What is your current inspiration?

The insanely beautiful festival of LED lights in Japan – It’s an absolute mind trip to be even looking at the images on your 15” laptop screen!

What do you splurge on?

Food! Also, I love buying jewellery that my mother gets baffled with – my dog/wolf ring for example.

What are your favourite colours/materials to work with?

They keep changing with every collection! Although, the idea is to stay away from a certain shade of neon pink.

Which is that one thing you wish you had designed?

Products by Tobi Wong – I love his subversive take on pop culture. His rose made from bulletproof fabric is a favourite.

Who are your favourite designers?

McQueen, Margiela, Stéphane Rolland, Miyake, Kawakubo, Iris Van Herpen, Nicholas Kirkwood – the list is endless!

Who or what would you choose to bring on a weekend getaway?

Shorts, tanks, maxi dresses, my cool fake Rayban Clubmasters and my music
