Hey Dad!

Hey Dad!

Sitting on the couch, looking trepidatiously into the middle distance, the boy was more than distraught. Things just didn’t seem to be going his way and he felt the immense weight of the world on his shoulders. Who could he talk to and what could he do. He was facing a conundrum whose consequences were far reaching and affecting.

Suddenly he felt the firm grip of a familiar hand on his shoulder, the anxiety of the few preceding moments washed away, like the ebbing tide. The person standing over beckoned to him; they went into the study and sat across from each other. His father looked at him with a knowing mien of concern and understanding. The boy knew that the burden was his not to bear. He had the patronage of his father and the resolute love that they share.

We have all been through a similar incident at some point in our lives. We all have always found comfort in the forbearance and the god-like counsel given by our Father.  Of the two persons in this world, to whom we owe our incalculable and insatiable gratitude, he forms an equal to the first.

Father’s Day was inaugurated in the United States as a match to Mother’s Day. Credit for father’s day is given to Sonora Dodd and founded in Spokane, Washington in 1910. The role of the father is often relegated to a secondary position as compared to the mother, but his prominence is equivalent. Children depend on their father for spiritual, emotional, physical, financial and social well-being. For daughters he is the ideal man in the world and the first man they adore. For sons, a father is the penultimate idol and the man they aspire to emulate.

Although not a tradition in India, the father has always been accorded a very high status, supported by the writings of many an Indian epic. In Hindu culture it is customary for children to touch their father’s feet in a sign of his immutable benediction. The father is held in supreme veneration.

A father is what a son aspires to be. A Father is the first man that a daughter looks up to and adulates.

In today’s day and age, the father-child relationship helps in the development of a child and builds stouter family bonds.

We love our father daily and with every passing minute, but it’s always worthwhile to dedicate that one special day just for him. So go ahead and buy him that watch, he keeps glancing at. Or splurge on those pair of shoes he’s always wanted. Take him out for dinner or visit you favorite haunt.

Let him know that you are thinking of him; surprise him by enriching your relationship, through an act of everlasting love and appreciation. Your love for him is unquestionable, renew that conviction through the 24 hrs, you spend in his exclusive and cherished company.
